Lake Muhazi, Rwanda

Whilst doing an assignment on coffee production in the Bicumbi area of Rwanda, I happened upon this shot of a portion of Lake Muhazi. Driving down a hill I noticed the dramatic composition of Lake Muhazi ahead of us, and yelled ‘Stop!’. The shot was grabbed very quickly from the side of the road.

Often whilst driving I have my camera in Av mode, set to a reasonably high ISO (800-1600), a reasonable depth of field (f11, or f16 if bright enough), with auto focus switched off and focus set to close to infinity. This combination allows you to quickly capture random happenings that occur as you pass by. Never shoot through car windows, the image quality is seriously degraded. Keep your wits about you, when leaning out of cars with cameras – you don’t want to lose your camera or your head.
